Matt + Kristine >> Engaged

Rachel Gulotta June 6, 2014

I love these two (three, if you count Scooby). So so so so much.

For starters, Matt is a photographer. We've been lucking out like that a lot this year. He gets it. Light. Location. And everything in between. All we did was show up and shoot. Perfect.

As if that wasn't enough, Matt + Kristine are two of the sweetest people we've ever met. I don't just mean in terms of clients. I mean in terms of people. They're so down to earth. So connected. So genuine. So refreshing. My absolute favorite part of their session happened when we found a parking space in a neighborhood where you have to put up a hefty fight to get a good one. Matt + Kristine both thought we might have accidentally taken a spot that someone else had claimed. After Matt had tidily parked us, he forfeited our spot and continued looking for a different one just in case. We don't really run into anyone like that around here, but I wish we did more often. Total gems.

Finally (the real kicker), they're straight up gorgeous (duh!). Kristine is one of those outstandingly beautiful people who doesn't seem to notice. She's nervous in front of the camera (as if it could ever take a bad frame of her), but obviously killed this session.

I'm so, so, so stoked for their wedding this August. In the meantime, this session will easily tide me over. We started in their (perfectlyyyyy well lit) apartment and ventured around their old campus/stomping grounds. We ended the session with gelato. It ruled.

Ashtyn + Sejal >> Engaged

Rachel Gulotta March 30, 2014

"She has made me a better person. She has shown me the world."

I love to learn about each couple we shoot. After we meet with each, I send out a questionnaire and coerce each of our couples to divulge all of the intimate details of their lives together. The "whys" — not just the "whens" and "wheres." It never gets old.

Ashtyn and Sejal went to college together at the University of Michigan. Though they didn't actually meet at the time, Sejal first noticed Ashtyn when he stepped out onto the basketball court at one of the games she attended and then again when they both moved to Chicago. After finally meeting, they realized so many more ties that brought them together—namely traveling. They've since seen 32 countries together and even got engaged in the Isuien Garden in Nara, Japan. Incredible.

When I asked Sejal what she loved about Ashtyn, she unloaded a series of simple details—ways that he considered her, embraced her passions, and put her needs first. I melted, but it was quickly easy to see why Ashtyn did when I read his response:

"Sejal is the toughest person I know...even though she has a soft heart and cries at random little things, like a dog commercial and she doesn't even like dogs.
She teaches me a lot.
When it comes to practical knowledge, call it street smarts if you want, I trust her over anyone. That is one of the main reasons I fell in love with her.
She knows sports and beer better than any man I know, myself included.
Have you looked at her? Have you seen those cheeks/dimples?
She likes to be in her drawls any and all of the time (just like me!).
Her loyalty. Her pride.
She navigates, I protect.

She has made me a better person.
She has shown me the world."

That last part stuck with me.

It was an honor shooting these two around the place where they first found each other. Below are a few of our favorites from Ashtyn + Sejal's University of Michigan A Day in the Life Session.

THIS IS RACHEL GULOTTA PHOTOGRAPHY.

we love people, but mostly we just love their quirks.

it's fragments and inches that completely separate each person from anyone else on the planet.

DETAILS AND RAW, ORGANIC EMOTION. THAT'S WHAT WE'RE AFTER.

we tell stories through photos + films in los angeles and around the world.

we love traveling, so take us somewhere new.
